The LOOONG Trip - Missionary Notebook

Dear Praying Friends,

As we continue to get settled back to "life" here in Papua New Guinea we are also making preparations for our return to Malaumanda on Tuesday. Thankfully, the boys have adjusted to the 14 hour time difference and have been sleeping through the night. We are also thankful that there are several other missionary families with kids here at the moment with whom Josiah has been able to play...He is playing LEGOs with one of his buddies right now. Yet another way God has answered prayer and helped him through the transition.

Well, as promised I need to give you a more detailed update of our travels, a testimony to God's provision really. Monday, as we checked our bags in at the counter, the agent for the airline told us that she was unable to check our bags through to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea and that we would in fact have to pick them up in Australia and have them rechecked. So, with nothing else to do but trust GOD and get on the plane, we left. (To say I thought about it during the entire flight across the STATES would be an understatement) Upon our arrival in Los Angeles, I quickly made my way to the Qantas departure desk to inquire about HOW we would go about picking up and rechecking our bags in Australia. (Thankfully, our arrival gate in Los Angeles was only two gates away from where we would be departing.) The agent himself didn't know but said we could ask a customs agent once we arrived. Then he asked if we had an entry visa for Australia. I told him we were not staying but just connecting through to Papua New Guinea so we had not gotten one. At this point, he became a little concerned and told me that in fact we should have gotten entry visas for Australia in case our connecting flight to PNG was canceled. It seemed as though our initial baggage quandary was developing into a bigger problem...

(One other praise is that although we did not having seats together, the Qantas agent DID make changes to allow us all to sit together during the 14 hour flight despite having announced that it was a completely full flight and there would be no changes.)

...Well, at long last we landed in Brisbane, Australia and began trying to find someone that could give us some direction as to how to get our bags and recheck them. We stopped and asked one of the security people, who also though we needed to see a customs agent. So, we ventured into the sea of other passengers in line to be processed through immigration and customs, and we prayed that the lengthy wait would not be in vain. Our turn finally came, and I recounted our baggage dilemma to the Immigration officer. Well, you should have seen the look on the officer's face. He immediately called over a customs agent who then asked someone else. A conference ensued and finally, someone I took to be "in charge" came and told us that because we did not have entry visas but our bags had been checked to Brisbane, there was going to be a $5000 fine for each of us...which the airline would have to pay...It was a bit of an ordeal to finally get our bags put onto our next flight but Praise the Lord! all of the customs, immigration and airport people were actually quite understanding and helpful. Thankfully, we also had a four hour layover, enough time to deal with it before we had to depart. Phew! Thank you LORD!

Anyway, international travel is anything but boring, a real adventure. Thank you all for praying us through some unusual obstacles!

Grace and Peace in our Savior's name,

John, Christina Josiah and Owen.

* I attached a picture of the boys 48hrs into our travels as we awaited our last flight. A pair of real troopers!

Reichard Report March- June 2010 - Missionary Notebook

Much has been happening here in Guatemala. Everything from natural disasters and new babies to loved ones moving away! I don't know where to start. God has been good and is seeing us through all the changes and transitions here. Deborah and I look forward to seeing what God has in store for us.

In case you have not heard... It's a Boy! David Benjamin Reichard was born on April 11, 2010. Deborah had him here in Santiago at a small hospital. The birth went very well. We left the house around 1 am and baby Davey was born at 4:55 am. We are grateful to God for him and we look forward to him helping us in our ministry.

We will be coming to Pennsylvania from July 1st to July 15th and we will be in Wisconsin from July 15-August 3rd. If you would like to meet with us while we are in the states feel free to contact us. Our e-mail is davereichard@gmail.com. Our phone # in Pennsylvania will be 610-966-4904, my parents' house. Our phone number in Wisconsin will be 920-490-4015.

The biggest change would be that Tom and Sue have moved to the United States. As a reminder, Tom and Sue are Deborah's parents and former directors of the children's home here. Sue left with their three adopted girls on June 5th. Tom left on June 9th with their two adopted sons. They will be in the states for at least a year if not forever. They are renting a home in Green Bay now. It is very hard for them to leave the ministry after 18 years, but Sue's mother is getting older and needs someone to look after her. They also hope to spend more time with their sons whom they left behind when they went on the mission field. Because of the situation, things had to move quickly making the transition even harder. God is good though and things are working out. Nate and Lizzie are going to be staying till May. They will be a big help. Deborah and I have taken over the ministry here and we are excited to see what God has in-store for us.

Since our last newsletter we have received two new children. Jaun, 7 years old, and Mynor, 7 months old. They both seem healthy and fairly well-tempered. Mynor was abandoned at a government funded clinic by his alcoholic parents. Jaun's story is below in the the child highlight. Both have not had an audience yet. Please pray that the judge has wisdom as to where they should go.

We started a Children's church program at a nearby church. Nate & Lizzie are heading it up and they, Deborah, myself, and Yelsi take turns teaching. Last week we had over 80 children! We are still hoping to make a school here. The Children's church may be a good way to get our foot in the door for the school. At this point we need volunteers to help run it.

You may have heard about the mud slides and volcano eruption that happened a few weeks ago. Please pray for the people of Guatemala. The news says that 150 + have died. We were unable to get to the local town for three days and we were not able to get to Guatemala City for about 6 days. Many of the roads are clear now, however there are mud slides every time it rains now. Different routes to the city are constantly being closed due to mud slides. Last week we took a mission team from Palm Valley Church in Texas to a village that had many homes destroyed in the mud slide. The team purchased many essential items and gave them to the people that had lost their homes.

The team from Palm Valley did many things while they were here. They put down ceramic tile, strung a barbed wire fence, washed cars, moved wood, and sanded beams. They also did school programs for two of the local schools and handed out school supplies and Christian activity books. We are very glad they came and enjoyed serving the Lord with them.

One of the changes that has come about with this transition is where to send your financial support.

Deborah and I are now fully responsible for the home and ministries here. This responsibility includes financial responsibility. Your financial support is greatly appreciated and can be sent to Harvest Fellowship Church:

Harvest Fellowship of Colebrookdale584 Colebrookdale Road

Thanks for Praying - Missionary Notebook

arrived home last Monday from my trip to another city on Sulawesi. The main purpose of the visit was to attend a Bible Dedication for a newly translated New Testament. This alone was extremely enlightening and encouraging. Seeing the interaction between churches, church leaders, tribal groups, organizations (and even different religions) centered around the arrival of the WORD into this local language was fascinating. I was also challenged to realize that the books that were distributed that day were the product of nearly 30 years of ministry! As a coworker here often reminds us: "This is a distance race!"

As I waited for a plane home (there are only 3 commercial flights a week), I was able to do a little sightseeing and fact finding for our team. As we've mentioned before, Amy and I are involved in helping new families as they transition to this part of central Indonesia. It just so happened that this city I visited is strategic to a few existing and developing tribal ministries, and a possible location for families learning Indonesian culture and language. So in my extra time I was able to gather some information and make some early contacts with churches there. As with our experience here in Manado, these churches will play a major role in helping new families adjust and adapt to the very different life here in Sulawesi. And I'm certain they will, because everyone I met was extremely caring and generous to the poor American "bachelor" among them. So much so, that the only food I bought myself all weekend was a cup of coffee!

Although I've been safely home for a few days already, I didn't want to miss the opportunity to say THANKYOU to everyone who prayed for Amy and the boys while I was away last week. They still had a few rough spots (as you might imagine) but everyone survived! Amy was blessed to have a close friend from church hang out each day and until evening so that there were another set of hands and eyes on the job. I have a feeling things could have been much worse without your prayers and encouragement. Again: THANKYOU!

In the next days and weeks we'll need your prayers a few other areas:
1. Continuing faithfulness in using our time well.

2. Grace and patience with each other and toward our boys.

3. Preparing for increased involvement at the Missionary Training Center next semester (teaching 2 classes/day).

4. Our housing situation (Yes, we ARE looking at another move soon!)

5. Making plans and setting goals for short and long term ministry here in Indonesia.

It's nice to be home and I know you'd all agree. We always appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and encouraging emails. Please keep 'em coming!

Safely Back - Missionary Notebook

Dear Prayer Family,

We have been wanting to write to you for a while now. We sat down weeks ago and started a letter but it never got finished. Now we would like to take a few minutes to catch you up on what has been going on.

We arrived safely back in Slovenia on Cinco de Mayo after spending just over 2 months in the US. We had good travels despite the strike and snowstorm that we arrived between when traveling to the US, and the volcanic eruption that didn't affect our travel, though it stranded and delayed so many others in the weeks leading up to our departure, back to Slovenia. Just in those things we felt blessed.

Our time in the US was wonderful and we enjoyed being able to catch up with so many of you. We would like to thank all the churches, groups and people that made time and place for us to visit, share, encourage and be encouraged. We also want to make sure that we thank so many of you for sharing with us your prayer, time and finances. We were truly blessed in so many ways. So we are thankful to God and to those whose hearts He moved (and were open to being moved) on our behalf. Thank you for your partnership with us.

Since we returned to Slovenia so much has happened. It is hard to believe that it has just been one month. We have been busy catching up with people here. That has been good and we have enjoyed seeing people again. We were happy to hear about things that continued while we were gone to the US. Our student Bible study didn't meet every week that we were gone, however it did meet, there were some new people that came out once or twice and God showed that this is His work and not ours, for which we are thankful. Since returning we have had some good opportunities to renew acquaintances and friendships, continue to study the Bible and share in the lives of others God's word and love.

At the same time we continue to sense a great need for prayer. While we see the beginnings of some good things happening here we sense that God has more that He is preparing for this city and we want to be faithful to pray and seek Him. We need Him to be the Author of anything that happens here. We desire that He would guide and direct our steps both short and long term...both big and small. Please join us in prayer as we seek continued direction.

Many of you joined with us in praying for our team mates to be able to finish raising support and receive clearance to come to Slovenia. While they have not raise quite all of their support, about 2 weeks after we arrived back in Slovenia Nathan and Dawn were given clearance to buy tickets and prepare for departure. Just a few days ago we picked them up at the airport! They are here! We are so excited to welcome them. God has already provided a place for them to stay and as they move in there they will begin to get set up and settled into life in Maribor.

Julia and Christian have transitioned back into life here. Christian is back in daycare which is helping prepare him to start school in September. Julia is missing the preschool she enjoyed so much in the US, however she has been enjoying learning with mama. Please pray as we consider, and try to find out exactly what options are available, for her schooling.

We are still waiting for final word on the charter for the Sara Women's Center. Apparently the charter has been approved but there has been some trouble with the computer recognizing the address. We are on the edge of being able to take final steps toward opening yet there are still some things standing in the way. We know it will all be in God's perfect timing but please pray with us through this process.

Please pray with us as we consider plans for the future, for the family center we want to move ahead with here in Maribor, for a Bible study for couples and young families, for Bible study topics for the summer months and as we consider the need for a new(er), larger car.

Again we are thankful for your care, concern, prayer, encouragement and support. We are always happy to hear from you so please don't hesitate to write us on email, Facebook, Skype or personal letter! We want to stay in touch with you. God bless.

When Daddy is Away - Missionary Notebook

Our week was filled with:
Day-long meetings
A graduation
A wedding
A BIG going away party
A night out with a fellow teacher and his family

This all means that our dress clothes haven't had much chance to get washed, and we haven't had to eat at home much. It's been a fun but tiring week. Here comes the weekend.

Since we are between semesters at the Missionary Training Center, we are looking at taking several working trips. First up, early this morning Michael left to attend a Bible dedication in another part of the island. He gets the privilege of travelling with several heads of our local board and is looking forward to spend time with these respected men. They are gong to leave him Saturday, so Saturday and Sunday night he will be looking for a bed to sleep in. He's also there to help develop church contacts, so we're praying that he'll get offered a bed at one of the church leaders homes. Otherwise he'll have to enjoy a night at a resort with himself.

At home the kids and I will be trying to pass time. It's the first time in a long time that Michael will be away. I've got swimming trips and friends and other small distractions planned. Please pray for us three as Daddy is away.

Pastor John Hutteman - Pastor Bios

Contact Pastor Hutteman

"Karat Kowa ni Yenkam Purik si haipras komi si". This greeting in the Iwam language of Papua New Guinea means, "I thank God for you all." As many people know, learning a second language is not easy. This was just one of the many difficulties that Pastor John Hutteman and his family faced in order to fulfill their desire to serve the Lord in foreign missions.

John Hutteman was born in Maryland, outside of D.C. He moved to Pennsylvania when he was in high school. After graduating from Freedom High School in Bethlehem, he married Debbie, whom he had met while working at the "golden arches". In 1976, John came to know the Lord as his personal savior through the witness of several family members who had gotten saved. He had two children by this time, and was living in Quakertown and working as a painter. He and Debbie started attending a small Baptist Church in Quakertown, but some things did not seem to make sense when compared to the more charismatic direction his family members had taken. His pastor at that time suggested he take some Bible classes at Philadelphia College of the Bible, so he did. In 1980, he started to attend Salem Bible Church, where Pastor Goodman was pastoring. He continued taking classes at PCB and after 4 years received his certificate. He had been challenged to missions, and in 1983, applied to both a home and foreign mission board. Both boards denied his applications because of lack of schooling. Pastor Rick pointed him to New Tribes Missions, but because of fear of the jungle settings they worked in, he left to pursue more education at Florida Bible College. While there, he earned his Associates degree, and God took away his fear and confirmed his leading to foreign missions, and especially to New Tribes Missions. A verse that was instrumental in helping him realize that God does not lead through fear was II Tim. 1:7.

John began training with New Tribes Missions in 1985. After 1½ years of training, he completed a year of deputation and left with his family for Papua New Guinea in 1988. Thirteen years and many family sacrifices later, they completed their work in tribal church planting. It was at this juncture, that Pastor John and his wife were praying for further direction and leading by the Lord. Their prayers were answered through a series of interesting events and in a way that was quite unexpected. They received an invitation to come on staff at Salem Bible Church.

Pastor John felt incredibly blessed to be a missionary, and never actually considered being a pastor until the offer from Salem Bible Church. In 2000, the Huttemans agreed to come on board, and have been serving here ever since 2001. Aside from raising 5 children-Abby, Michael, Rachel, Tara, and John-now grown, Debbie has served at Salem in the area of ladies' ministries. Pastor John's responsibilities include the handling of the Family Life and Equipping aspects of Salem's ministries, as well as preaching, and sharing responsibilities with the other pastors, such as visitation, funerals, and weddings.

Pastor Hutteman completed a 4 yr degree from Lancaster Bible College in 2004, and is currently working on his Masters program. In his spare time, Pastor Hutteman enjoys spending time with his family.

HIS Players is also available to present meaningful (and often humorous) short entertainments for holidays, special occasions and smaller events, such as Ladies' Ministry programs. Longer programs, such as for outreach events, are also within our scope. It is our hope to present an outreach Dinner Theater in the near future and to eventually form a Traveling Troupe.

Pastor Kevin Schultz - Pastor Bios

Contact Pastor Schultz

From ‘pasture' to ‘pastor', Kevin Schultz has broadened his farming skills from tending the herds down on the farm, to tending the flock of God up at the "Church on the mountain." Pastor Kevin, "PK" to those who know him well, was born and raised in East Greenville, PA, on a 27-acre farm that has been in his family since the 1700s, and his family's good testimony has been widely respected in the community for generations. At the young age of 6, he came to know the Lord through the leading of his mom.

It was in1980, when he was in the 6th grade, that he began attending Salem Christian School, and continued to do so until he graduated in 1987. After graduation, he went on to receive an associate's degree in liberal arts from Pinebrook Junior College in 1989, and began working as a mechanic at a garage in Bechtelsville. It was during this time that Pastor Kevin began coaching soccer at Salem Christian and helping out with the youth at Salem Bible Church. He had been mentored and influenced himself as a youth by many teachers, coaches, and other people at Salem, especially Pastor Dan O'Brien. Pastor Kevin met his future wife at Salem, and through working in her parents ministry, the Puppet Pals, and continuing to volunteer as a coach and youth leader, he began to realize that he was not finding fulfillment as a mechanic, but rather in his ministry with the youth, and God began to stir in him the desire to serve full-time.

Beth Howard and Kevin Schultz were married in 1991, and in 1992, the Lord opened the door for him to become Youth Pastor here at Salem. He continued ministering to the youth until he completed his BS in Bible from Philadelphia Biblical University in 2004, when his ministry took on a more adult role at Salem as program director, which also included being in charge of the order of service for Sunday worship time.

Over the years, the Lord has blessed Pastor Kevin's family, which includes 2 children, Megan and Philip, who have also served with him at times during worship, as well as in short-term mission trips. His wife, Beth, has previously taught 2nd grade at Salem Christian School, but is currently using her elementary education degree to serve as 5th grade teacher at Salem Christian School. She can be found Sunday mornings serving behind the visitor table in the foyer, as well as using her hospitality to welcome new families into her home to get to know them.

Pastor Kevin's responsibilities include helping the other 2 pastors by filling in preaching when needed, leading the worship service, overseeing the church staff, and heading up large events. His passion is to see Christians grow in their relationship with the Lord, and his way of facilitating that goal is by helping new people get connected, acclimated, and involved at Salem by helping them ascertain their needs and gifts. It is his desire and vision that Salem be a haven for the community, a place where people can find refreshment and renewed energy in their Christian walk, and where families can serve together.

Pastor Kevin is currently pursuing a 3 yr. program at Biblical Theological Seminary in Hatfield, Pa, where he will receive a Masters in Divinity. He also uses his carpentry skills by making cabinets for a local organ company on the side, and in his very spare time, enjoys playing basketball and golf.

Pastor Rick Goodman - Pastor Bios

Contact Pastor Goodman

The year was 1964. The 1st Beatles album was released in the U.S. The 1st Ford Mustang rolled off the assembly line. Merv Griffin's game show, "Jeopardy", debuted on NBC. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was passed authorizing the U.S.'s involvement in the Vietnam War. And Rick Goodman graduated from high school to embark on the next phase of his life at Le Tourneau College in TX. These are only a few of the events of that year, and while some may seem more important than others, the events that brought Rick Goodman to Salem Bible Church in Macungie, PA, hold significance in the lives of those he has touched over the years.

Pastor Rick was born in Monroeville, outside of Pittsburgh, PA, but moved with his family to Fort Lauderdale, FL, when he was 3. After his graduation from high school, he completed 2 years of his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at Le Tourneau College. In the summer between his sophomore and junior years of college, he came to truly know the Lord as his Savior while attending a youth ministry called, "Ranch". Then, during his third year at Le Tourneau, he lost interest in pursuing his engineering degree, dedicated his life to the Lord at Camp Bibletown in Boca Raton, Fl, and went right to Florida Bible College.

In 1968, he married Carol Ann, who had also been attending Florida Bible College. After his graduation with a BA in Bible from FBC in '69, they moved to Southampton, PA, where they became house parents at an orphanage called "Bethanna". From there they moved to Doylestown and started the same youth ministry, "Ranch", that had been so influential in his own life. He continued with the "Ranch" ministry for the next 8 yrs., while also becoming youth pastor at First Baptist Church in Doylestown, where he assisted the Senior Pastor during 6 ½ of those 8 yrs. with "Ranch". It was the desire of Pastor Rick and Carol Ann to eventually start a church up in Schuylkill Haven, so for the next several months after his resignation from First Baptist, they began to investigate the area for opportunities.

It was a call from Steve Spacek that eventually led Pastor Rick, Carol Ann, and their two boys, Rick and Dan to Salem. Steve, who had helped start other churches, had been told that Salem was in need of a pastor at that time, and asked Pastor Rick if he would be willing to fill in until they were able to find one. Pastor Rick agreed to commute from Doylestown, and from Oct. '77 through March '78, he got to know the people of the church very well, often having dinner and staying in the their homes after long days. God used this time to bring about a desire for Pastor Rick and his family to permanently stay on at Salem, and in March '78, they agreed to do so. Along with Pastor David Haines, of First Baptist, Pastor Rick has credited many people of faith here at Salem for mentoring and influencing his own life.

During his years here at Salem, Pastor Rick has also earned a Masters degree in Religious Education. He was also instrumental in founding Salem Christian School. Besides preaching, his responsibilities include the evangelism/outreach aspects of Salem's ministries, as well as sharing other responsibilities with the other pastors such as visitation, funerals, and weddings. Carol Ann, along with raising two boys, has also served by his side in teaching ladies' Bible studies, heading up the nursery ministry, setting up funeral meals, plus much more "behind the scenes" work. In his spare time, Pastor Rick enjoys the peaceful serenity of Lake Nockamixon in his little boat.

Missionaries are normal, everyday people put into situations that aren't so normal. We all feel the same feelings of fear, of inadequacy, of need, of uncertainty. As you read the stories below, think how you would react if you were put into the same situations.
