Pastor John Hutteman - Pastor Bios

Contact Pastor Hutteman

"Karat Kowa ni Yenkam Purik si haipras komi si". This greeting in the Iwam language of Papua New Guinea means, "I thank God for you all." As many people know, learning a second language is not easy. This was just one of the many difficulties that Pastor John Hutteman and his family faced in order to fulfill their desire to serve the Lord in foreign missions.

John Hutteman was born in Maryland, outside of D.C. He moved to Pennsylvania when he was in high school. After graduating from Freedom High School in Bethlehem, he married Debbie, whom he had met while working at the "golden arches". In 1976, John came to know the Lord as his personal savior through the witness of several family members who had gotten saved. He had two children by this time, and was living in Quakertown and working as a painter. He and Debbie started attending a small Baptist Church in Quakertown, but some things did not seem to make sense when compared to the more charismatic direction his family members had taken. His pastor at that time suggested he take some Bible classes at Philadelphia College of the Bible, so he did. In 1980, he started to attend Salem Bible Church, where Pastor Goodman was pastoring. He continued taking classes at PCB and after 4 years received his certificate. He had been challenged to missions, and in 1983, applied to both a home and foreign mission board. Both boards denied his applications because of lack of schooling. Pastor Rick pointed him to New Tribes Missions, but because of fear of the jungle settings they worked in, he left to pursue more education at Florida Bible College. While there, he earned his Associates degree, and God took away his fear and confirmed his leading to foreign missions, and especially to New Tribes Missions. A verse that was instrumental in helping him realize that God does not lead through fear was II Tim. 1:7.

John began training with New Tribes Missions in 1985. After 1½ years of training, he completed a year of deputation and left with his family for Papua New Guinea in 1988. Thirteen years and many family sacrifices later, they completed their work in tribal church planting. It was at this juncture, that Pastor John and his wife were praying for further direction and leading by the Lord. Their prayers were answered through a series of interesting events and in a way that was quite unexpected. They received an invitation to come on staff at Salem Bible Church.

Pastor John felt incredibly blessed to be a missionary, and never actually considered being a pastor until the offer from Salem Bible Church. In 2000, the Huttemans agreed to come on board, and have been serving here ever since 2001. Aside from raising 5 children-Abby, Michael, Rachel, Tara, and John-now grown, Debbie has served at Salem in the area of ladies' ministries. Pastor John's responsibilities include the handling of the Family Life and Equipping aspects of Salem's ministries, as well as preaching, and sharing responsibilities with the other pastors, such as visitation, funerals, and weddings.

Pastor Hutteman completed a 4 yr degree from Lancaster Bible College in 2004, and is currently working on his Masters program. In his spare time, Pastor Hutteman enjoys spending time with his family.

Ministry News

Much has happened the past four months, both in the ministry and in our personal lives. Christmas went well and we were able to get the children more than enough gifts. Pedro has been put back with his mother. We were not notified beforehand. The police and social workers came and took him away one day. Somehow the mother convinced the courts to give him back. Pedro was removed from his home in the first place because his father beat his nine year old daughter to death. Little baby Ana had her audience. It is usually rare for a mother to come to the audience of an abandoned baby, but Ana's mother came. She seemed rather responsible and explained the situation that led to her leaving Ana at the hospital. She said she was raped and did not want her husband, who is in the US. to find out. The reason she did not want him to find out was so that he would keep sending money for the other 8 children they have to go to school. She said she feared that he would not believe it was a rape. In an effort to hide that she was pregnant from friends and family, she starved herself through the pregnancy. Little Ana was born at a whopping two and a half pounds because of it. Ana was declared adoptable but only in Guatemala. Social workers came and evaluated her a couple of days ago and gave her a clean bill of health. We are praying she will go to a good Christian family, which we told them as well.

As some of you know, we are trying to get some children from Haiti. The Guatemalan government has given us permission to get the children. Tom is planning on fly his plane to Haiti with the head of the Department of Human Rights, Head of the Evangelical Church of Guatemala, and the Guatemalan ambassador to Haiti.

I have been working on some projects around the house. One of the girls' bathrooms needed some plumbing done. Our missionary friend, Micah helped with that. I have been working on building shelves for an extra bedroom in Tom and Sue's house (my in-laws). Tom and Sue were gone all of November and the first week in Dec. Much of my time was occupied by simply taking care of the children. Another project I have been working on is making furniture for Nate and Lizzie's room. Tom and Sue's daughter and son in law have come down for six months to help at the home.

We are very happy that Nate & Lizzie are here. Nate helps with the computers and school. He is also in the process of setting up a web page for the home. Lizzie helps clean the house, cooks, and teaches. She is also a nurse and physical therapist assistant so she plans on helping some missionary friends of ours with their medical mission here in Guatemala. She also helps with physical therapy for Martina.

We now have a child sponsorship program. Here is the web address. www.orphansponsor.org. You can also support the home through this web site. If you have any question, please contact us. Contact info on last page.

Sabina had her high school graduation party. We sent here to a program called " Master's Commission" at a church in Texas. The program teaches young adults to be leaders and gives them tools to be effective missionaries. Sabina is the first child to leave the home as an adult. We look forward to seeing what God does with her. She wants to be a missionary.

A school from the refugee camp brought about 13 children to come and play with ours. They had fun playing on our rope swing and swing set. We got to see some of the children that come to our Sunday school kids' meeting at the refugee camp.

We had a number of groups visit. Project H.A.N.D.S, Orphan Resources International, and a group from Canada came. They all brought things for the children and we are very grateful for the visits.

Personal News

Deborah and I are doing well. Deborah is doing well with the pregnancy and is not getting sick much anymore. She is 7 months in now. We got to see the baby about a week ago and found out it is a BOY! We are very exited to have a child of our own. He is doing well and is in the correct position. He is due April 24th. We have not picked out a name quite yet. Oddly enough, we had a girl name picked out.

I have been trying to reach out to some Americans that live nearby. Also I have made a new friend in town. His name is Gregorio and he teaches me Tzutujil, the local dialect and I teach him English whenever we see each other.

Deborah and I went to a Mission's Conference in Florida last month. We had a great time and were blessed immensely by both the church itself and the congregation. Everyone was very generous and kind. Everyone fed us so well I think we were full the entire time! Tom and Sue were not able to attend because of the recent death of Tom's father. While we were in the states we also got to visit my brother. He is in the Marines and will be leaving for his first deployment to Afghanistan soon. Please keep him and his wife in your prayers.

I started playing soccer with some of the locals in an effort to learn the local language as well as build some relationships. Tom, Sue, Deborah, and I were interviewed for a book that is being written about Guatemala.

Thank you all for your prayers and support. We are currently low on children. We started calling courts the other day to tell them we are open to take children. If we do not get the children from Haiti we are hoping to start a school locally. We are exited to see what God is going to do here in Atitlan Guatemala! Please feel free to contact us if you want to know more about the home. We love to hear from people. Contact info and info on how to support us is on the last page.

News from Indonesia - Missionary Notebook

Well, that's Life.

I still remember a biology class definition of life as dynamic-meaning it is always moving, constantly changing. If we go with that simple definition, it's safe to say that we are very alive. In fact, we are so alive, it's hard to describe where we are at any given time, much less what has taken place in the past few months. Instead we'll focus on the many changes that still await us.

a change of SCHEDULE
For starters, we have begun to interact more regularly with the staff and students at the missionary training center here. A few days a week we (or atleast Michael) spends the morning attending classes there. In just two weeks, we have already been encouraged by the enthusiasm and determination of the many students who have made great sacrifices in their desire to serve God. Every day we are strengthened in our own walk by the teaching that they are sitting under. And as they prepare to become effective communicators of God's Truth, we are excited to see where God can use us in that process. Although continuing to progress in that direction ourselves, we are constantly reminded of our own need for help in the area of communication. This language thing can be tricky sometimes!

a change of ADDRESS

Another coming change involves our physical setting. While we have learned many new things through our current housing situation (back story: we have been living in an upstairs apartment of an Indonesian family's home since November), we see great value in finding a home with a little more privacy and personal space. Just this afternoon we made counter offers with 2 home owners as we haggle over rental prices, contract agreements, and the like. In the maddening house hunt we need to remember our real purpose and criteria in moving: we want to relate with, learn from, and impact people. We are trying to locate in a more strategic neighborhood where we will be able to carry out that goal well. Beside that, the rest comes down to paint color and curb appeal

a change in FAMILY

We are really starting to feel the pressure in this house search as we are only 3 weeks away from Amy's due date. To this point we have been blessed with a rather smooth pregnancy. We hope and pray that will continue through into this little boy's adolescent years. But even an absolutely smooth delivery here well cause some stress as we are living in a different world that operates by different rules. We are praying for grace and strength to adapt where we need to adapt, while maintaining those few things we just don't need to give up. You are sure to hear more of that in coming emails.

So while we've been in a state of constant change-with much more on the way-we realize that it is really not a novel thing. So what, we're alive! The changes that really matter are the ones that should be taking place within us. Those changes point to a different sort of Life. How are you changing these days?

(Ed's note: Daryl Hess is the maintenance expert assigned to the NTM Hoskins base.)

Daryl's journal of trip into Lavalus...

November --Mission: Bush Truck Repair: At 5:45am we left for the town/ city of Kandrian...as we descend to the one mile long grassy airstrip (located up on a hill) we see a run-down pole building, a two feet high grass surrounding the "airstrip", outhouses-"man" and "meri" off to the side, and the "Welcome to Kandrian Airport" sign ... about 6:30am, we land and off- load our cargo. Normally, we would travel next via four-wheeler about an hour in good weather up to the village. (The four wheeler is often used for travel, transports, visiting the different outreaches and churches scattered over a big area.). But it does rain a lot on the south coast-the missionary was soaked but he had tarps to cover the cargo. Because of heavy and bulky cargo, instead of a four wheeler, we climb aboard a truck the missionary hired to take me and the cargo into the bush where the missionaries live and minister. So off we go up and down these dirt roads faster then I was prepared for over the bumps and dips. Everything is going well until... the truck gets a flat tire on the front... the spare tire is flat from the day before the driver says. So, they take a tire off the back and put on the front... 1/2hour later we are on the road again and going up a hill... but we couldn't make the hill. So, the driver had to back down ending up resulting in another flat tire on the front again. They take one off the other side on the back this one...but he had to take both off the back because the inside one was bald and he wanted the outside one on the back for traction. We put the bald one on the front... about 9:00am we are on our way again. Finally, we arrive at the missionaries houses at around 9:30 am. By 10:00 I am able to begin to work on and weld (or try to weld) the missionaries' truck frame. I had brought a small welder with me thinking I could parallel the two generators they had in order to run the welder ... that didn't work. They had a bigger generator there that wasn't putting out power so I looked at it and found out the capacitors were bad and took one off something else and tried it ... it ended up blowing that capacitor also. The other missionary had a small mig welder ... I tried it but it didn't get the metal hot enough. So, I heated the metal red hot with a torch first and then welded it. We worked til 10pm then got up early the next morning and worked til 10 am accomplishing more than they expected. At 10am we had to load up the 4 wheeler with all our stuff and head out to the air strip at 11am in order to be at the airstrip by 12:30. Since we encountered no difficulties, we got there early and the missionary took me on a quick tour of Kandrian-a "city" of about 1000 people right on the coast of the ocean... then since the plane was late, I also got to quick visit other missionaries working with a different people group on the outskirts of Kandrian... and then the flight arrived and I left to return back to Hoskins. It was good to be home... but I didn't get to stay long. Shortly after arriving back, an ambulance arrived for me to request my help with the generator powering their hospital. Off I go again...

Thanks for your part through prayers, encouragement and support in reaching out to Kaulong and Kaul people as well as the missionaries working among them.

Howard February 2010 Update - Missionary Notebook

In this update....

Update & Prayer Points
- Big News! - Furlough - traveling to the US - end of February to beginning of May
- Pray for preparation, travel and adjustment in the US - health, safe travel
- Prayer for the Student Bible study - run smoothly while we are gone - growth
- Good and meaningful time in the US - opportunities to catch up, share, meet people
- Pray for re-entry to Slovenia, re-connect with friends & acquaintances

Dear Prayer Family,
It has been a busy season for us. The first month of the year has flown past and we know that February will be behind us before we know it. And right now we have even more to do... why?

We have some big news to pass along to you so we will talk about that right off the bat! Just recently ... days ago ... we found out that we had an opportunity to travel to the US for furlough! It is complex, but let's simply say that with some changes in the situations, plans and status of ourselves and others we found ourselves with a decision to make, and it seems that God has opened the door for us to travel to the US at the end of February!

It has been almost 3 years since we have been in the US and since we have seen so many of you. Let me put that in perspective... Christian is now 5 and been in kindergarten for over half a year. Julia, who was 2 months old when we were last in the US is now turning 3! She isn't a baby anymore! It can be all so hard to believe.
Right now our plans are to travel at the end of February and arrive in the US just before the end of the month. We plan to stay for about 2 months with a plan to return to Slovenia the first week in May.

This is always so bitter sweet. On the one hand it is hard to leave the friends and the work that God has given us here. There are lots of things going on here even through things can move so slowly. It is also hard because we don't want to lose momentum. However, this is also God's work and we have already seen how He is opening opportunities and providing for those whom we are leaving!
On the other hand, we are excited because we will get to see so many of you that we haven't seen in so long and whom we miss so much. We look forward to seeing you, catching up some and perhaps even finding new or better ways to keep in touch!

Now here is where we need your help! We really want to make the most of our time in the US and catch up with as many of you as possible. We want to be able to visit with as many individuals, groups, churches and even new people as possible! To do that we need for you to plan ahead if you would like to get together with us or would like us to visit you, your small group or church. Sometimes 2 months sounds like plenty of time, but it goes by so quickly and we usually find that our last week to 10 days are crazy with visits and last minute meetings. We don't mind ... we just want to see you!

Also while we are in the US we would like to be able to make some new acquaintances. We continue to be at minimum support levels, but see God faithfully provide. We would love to be able to share this ministry with new people and churches and encourage them wherever possible. If you know of a small group, church or group that you think would be interested in hearing more would you please consider talking to them on our behalf and helping us to arrange a meeting? It would be a great help.

Right now we already have several things scheduled for our time home. We plan to be a part of the Missions Conference at Faith Evangelical Free Church the weekend of March 12-14. We look forward to seeing many friends there! We are planning on visiting our Mission base in the Orlando area the week of March 21 and so if you are in that area please make plans so we can to get together! In April we have been invited to Davidsville Community Church near Johnstown, Pa and so if you are in that area please also be planning for the 2nd weekend in April.

Please be praying for us as we make arrangements to leave Slovenia for our time in the US. There are many things to do to prepare for departure. Please pray for safety and smooth travel and adjusting to a new schedule and time zone...especially for the kids. Pray also for good health for all of us as sickness could greatly complicate preparation and travel. Pray for the groups and people we leave here in Slovenia that things that continue would run smoothly and that we would be able to easily re-connect when we return. And pray for our time in the US to be a blessing to those that we meet as well as to us, and that God would accomplish in that time His desire and will in us and others.
Thank you so much for faithfully standing with us in prayer and support. We look forward so much to seeing you!

Blessings
Jim Olya Christian and Julia

HIS Players is also available to present meaningful (and often humorous) short entertainments for holidays, special occasions and smaller events, such as Ladies' Ministry programs. Longer programs, such as for outreach events, are also within our scope. It is our hope to present an outreach Dinner Theater in the near future and to eventually form a Traveling Troupe.

HIS Players is the Drama Ministry of Salem Bible Church, Our purpose is to present well-written, well-rehearsed drama to illustrate truth and to prepare hearts. It is our passion to see hearts softened and prepared to receive God's Word and to present a mirror in which we can see the truth about ourselves. Our Sunday morning presentations are 5-8 minute sketches as requested from time to time by the pastors to illustrate a particular message..

Pastor Kevin Schultz - Pastor Bios

Contact Pastor Schultz

From ‘pasture' to ‘pastor', Kevin Schultz has broadened his farming skills from tending the herds down on the farm, to tending the flock of God up at the "Church on the mountain." Pastor Kevin, "PK" to those who know him well, was born and raised in East Greenville, PA, on a 27-acre farm that has been in his family since the 1700s, and his family's good testimony has been widely respected in the community for generations. At the young age of 6, he came to know the Lord through the leading of his mom.

It was in1980, when he was in the 6th grade, that he began attending Salem Christian School, and continued to do so until he graduated in 1987. After graduation, he went on to receive an associate's degree in liberal arts from Pinebrook Junior College in 1989, and began working as a mechanic at a garage in Bechtelsville. It was during this time that Pastor Kevin began coaching soccer at Salem Christian and helping out with the youth at Salem Bible Church. He had been mentored and influenced himself as a youth by many teachers, coaches, and other people at Salem, especially Pastor Dan O'Brien. Pastor Kevin met his future wife at Salem, and through working in her parents ministry, the Puppet Pals, and continuing to volunteer as a coach and youth leader, he began to realize that he was not finding fulfillment as a mechanic, but rather in his ministry with the youth, and God began to stir in him the desire to serve full-time.

Beth Howard and Kevin Schultz were married in 1991, and in 1992, the Lord opened the door for him to become Youth Pastor here at Salem. He continued ministering to the youth until he completed his BS in Bible from Philadelphia Biblical University in 2004, when his ministry took on a more adult role at Salem as program director, which also included being in charge of the order of service for Sunday worship time.

Over the years, the Lord has blessed Pastor Kevin's family, which includes 2 children, Megan and Philip, who have also served with him at times during worship, as well as in short-term mission trips. His wife, Beth, has previously taught 2nd grade at Salem Christian School, but is currently using her elementary education degree to serve as 5th grade teacher at Salem Christian School. She can be found Sunday mornings serving behind the visitor table in the foyer, as well as using her hospitality to welcome new families into her home to get to know them.

Pastor Kevin's responsibilities include helping the other 2 pastors by filling in preaching when needed, leading the worship service, overseeing the church staff, and heading up large events. His passion is to see Christians grow in their relationship with the Lord, and his way of facilitating that goal is by helping new people get connected, acclimated, and involved at Salem by helping them ascertain their needs and gifts. It is his desire and vision that Salem be a haven for the community, a place where people can find refreshment and renewed energy in their Christian walk, and where families can serve together.

Pastor Kevin is currently pursuing a 3 yr. program at Biblical Theological Seminary in Hatfield, Pa, where he will receive a Masters in Divinity. He also uses his carpentry skills by making cabinets for a local organ company on the side, and in his very spare time, enjoys playing basketball and golf.

Pastor Rick Goodman - Pastor Bios

Contact Pastor Goodman

The year was 1964. The 1st Beatles album was released in the U.S. The 1st Ford Mustang rolled off the assembly line. Merv Griffin's game show, "Jeopardy", debuted on NBC. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was passed authorizing the U.S.'s involvement in the Vietnam War. And Rick Goodman graduated from high school to embark on the next phase of his life at Le Tourneau College in TX. These are only a few of the events of that year, and while some may seem more important than others, the events that brought Rick Goodman to Salem Bible Church in Macungie, PA, hold significance in the lives of those he has touched over the years.

Pastor Rick was born in Monroeville, outside of Pittsburgh, PA, but moved with his family to Fort Lauderdale, FL, when he was 3. After his graduation from high school, he completed 2 years of his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at Le Tourneau College. In the summer between his sophomore and junior years of college, he came to truly know the Lord as his Savior while attending a youth ministry called, "Ranch". Then, during his third year at Le Tourneau, he lost interest in pursuing his engineering degree, dedicated his life to the Lord at Camp Bibletown in Boca Raton, Fl, and went right to Florida Bible College.

In 1968, he married Carol Ann, who had also been attending Florida Bible College. After his graduation with a BA in Bible from FBC in '69, they moved to Southampton, PA, where they became house parents at an orphanage called "Bethanna". From there they moved to Doylestown and started the same youth ministry, "Ranch", that had been so influential in his own life. He continued with the "Ranch" ministry for the next 8 yrs., while also becoming youth pastor at First Baptist Church in Doylestown, where he assisted the Senior Pastor during 6 ½ of those 8 yrs. with "Ranch". It was the desire of Pastor Rick and Carol Ann to eventually start a church up in Schuylkill Haven, so for the next several months after his resignation from First Baptist, they began to investigate the area for opportunities.

It was a call from Steve Spacek that eventually led Pastor Rick, Carol Ann, and their two boys, Rick and Dan to Salem. Steve, who had helped start other churches, had been told that Salem was in need of a pastor at that time, and asked Pastor Rick if he would be willing to fill in until they were able to find one. Pastor Rick agreed to commute from Doylestown, and from Oct. '77 through March '78, he got to know the people of the church very well, often having dinner and staying in the their homes after long days. God used this time to bring about a desire for Pastor Rick and his family to permanently stay on at Salem, and in March '78, they agreed to do so. Along with Pastor David Haines, of First Baptist, Pastor Rick has credited many people of faith here at Salem for mentoring and influencing his own life.

During his years here at Salem, Pastor Rick has also earned a Masters degree in Religious Education. He was also instrumental in founding Salem Christian School. Besides preaching, his responsibilities include the evangelism/outreach aspects of Salem's ministries, as well as sharing other responsibilities with the other pastors such as visitation, funerals, and weddings. Carol Ann, along with raising two boys, has also served by his side in teaching ladies' Bible studies, heading up the nursery ministry, setting up funeral meals, plus much more "behind the scenes" work. In his spare time, Pastor Rick enjoys the peaceful serenity of Lake Nockamixon in his little boat.
